INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO L&T MADH

INDUSTRIAL VISIT REPORT

As part of our curriculum for Manufacturing Processes, we visited Larsen & Toubro Training Center situated in Madh. We were supposed to get hands on experience on the machineries and get all the skills inducted required to complete a work-piece. Larsen and Toubro is one of the leading companies in the corporate sector and has entered in various ventures, being among the leading companies. It was a proud feeling to be visiting this good a company!
We started our session with the presentation on Safety Guidelines and General Awareness by Mr. Patil who held a masters’ degree in Safety Issue and was associated with the company for more than 30 years. He mentioned that although we can rectify the mistakes through common sense but for an accident to occur all it takes is one second. He explained to us the different ways in ways in which the mishap can take place and how we can take precautionary measures to prevent the accident, thus safeguarding the laborers’ life. Mr. Patil also went into detail of the responsibility of the management to make the workshops a workable place and how it is labors right to ask for the safety equipments if he thinks that there could be a chance of an accident. It is company’s duty to register the accident to Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health, showing the cause and how the company looks forward to prevent it the coming future.
After about a 3 hours lecture we moved to the first aid techniques, Sir showed us how to disconnect a labor from the direct shock and dos and don’ts while taking care of the self too. And also how to perform CPR on a person who has just got severe electrical shock. At the end, we got to handle the fire-extinguisher and put off the fire. We came to the end of this session with a safety anthem, promising to be a responsible engineer.
During the second half, we attended the machining workshop, which was the main aspect of the visit. The person in charge there described to us the various parts of the Universal Milling Machine, but safety first, asked us to put on safety goggles. He showed us how a spindle wheel works, how to change gears, how to set depth by adjusting the cross feed handle, also reading the lengths with every turn of the wheel. Then, we were provided with a metal slab and asked us to take the measurements of it. Next, he gave us new dimensions and by milling operations asked to reduce it to the given measurements. It was a challenging to operate the machine for the first time but in the end we managed easily.
When a job is finished, it is necessary to smoothen the surface in order to minimize the surface to surface friction. It is done by the Grinding Machine. The Grinding Abrasive Wheel, part which brushes with the metal surface to smoothen it, is made up of Aluminum Oxide and has to be polished itself to get the uniform grind. The Metal slab is kept on Table lock, which is an electromagnetic surface, and with the proper dimension, the wheel is just made to touch the metal surface, the machine flattens the surface with the reciprocating translating motion on the metal surface. In the end, we were demonstrated metal heat treatment, which can be also used in the manufacture of glass. Heat treatment is used to achieve a desired result such as hardening and softening of a material.
This visit to Larsen and Toubro added great deal of experience in terms of mechanical skills and patience. Overall it was a good exposure and according to me, we managed to achieve the purpose of the visit. In one day, one could not ask for more enriching day than this. I appreciate the support shown by the staff at L&T and also thank Chavan sir for giving us the opportunity to attend this training.
